Well friends, I have exciting news. You know how some people can keep a secret? I am not one of them. I wrote a book, it’s pretty great, and it’s almost here.
It’s called Make Something Meaningful.
Wow, you say, that sounds familiar.
Well, it’s actually what inspired this site. Writing is my love language, especially writing about creativity, meaning, and connection. This book delves into the professional side of creative work – a world I’ve been privileged to be a part of for the past 25 years.
I can’t wait to share it with you.
Make Something Meaningful is a deep dive into the world of creative commission work. It digs into both the practical and emotional sides – or what I call the how tos (how to come up with an idea, how to decide what to charge, how to write a contract) and the what ifs (what if something goes wrong, what if a buyer doesn’t like it, what if they don’t pay). You’ll learn how to take on the projects you want, avoid the ones you don’t, and have the confidence and wisdom to know the difference.
My favorite sections include:
- The Creative Equation, which digs into the brain science around the creative process, and teaches you a simple way to keep your creative work yours
- The Customer Service Pyramid, an elegant tool which helps you navigate the parts of the process that are messy and human and wonderful
- Unlocking The Big Doors, which helps you stretch your creative comfort zone to tap into markets that feel exclusive, elusive, and out of reach.
…plus When to Say Yes and How to Say No, Project What You Want to Attract, The Most Important Ingredient of All, and many, many more. And if you don’t do commission work, you’ll find much of the book relevant to selling artwork and creative items in general.
The paperback is coming soon, and hardcover copies are available for preorder. I’ll be sharing some fun stories and previews in the days ahead, but if you want a sneak peek…
